About Bulgaria - Bansko

The town of Bansko is located 160 kms south of Sofia, at an altitude of 925m and just a ski lift ride away from the Pirin mountain and its 2,900 metre peak.

It has developed into a modern winter resort with its ski facilities and hotels offering accommodation at well below European prices. Since the start of its "re-development" in 2002, it has gradually become a favourite ski location for many tourists, rivalling the more established areas of Pamporovo and Borovets.

Due to the proximity of the Rila and Pirin national parks and the emergence of Spa facilities, the area around Bansko is now attracting summer tourists.

The slopes offer runs and tracks for all types of skiers and suit both beginners and experts and the ski infrastructure is undergoing steady development to keep pace with demand.

Bansko, unlike its rivals, is a town with character and history. The numerous churches and traditional "mehanas" (taverna), together with its folklore, crafts and cuisine, give the town an authentic feel.

Recent developments in and around the town have seen the emergence of hotel and apartment complexes, offering varying levels of facilities, which typically include Jacuzzi, sauna, steam baths, swimming pools, fitness rooms and facilities for children and their care.

An 18-hole, 'Phil Woosnam' golf course is being constructed nearby, as are Spa facilities and together with the annual summer jazz festival, these will add to the summer appeal of the area.
