Montana
Montana is a city in northwestern Bulgaria, located 50 km south of the Danube, 40 km northwest of Vratsa and 30 km east of the Serbian border on the river Ogosta, which has the largest dam lake in Bulgaria.

Surrounded on the south and east by uplands, it was founded by the Romans, who used it as a fortress. It developed into a town in 1891, and has been called Montana since 1991.
It has a temperate continental climate, with a cold winter and hot summer, with an average temperature range from -2C in January to 25C in July.
Montana is the principal city and administrative centre of Montana region, which is divided into 11 municipalities with 130 villages and towns and a popuplation of around 184,000. It borders with Romania in the north and Serbia in the south-west.

Montana is a region with millennia of history, numerous historical and cultural monuments, clean environment and many locations for tourism and holidays.
South of Montana are the remains of the old Roman fortress Kastra ad Montanezium. This is actually where the name of the town came from. Most of the artefacts, found there are kept in the Historical museum of Montana.
Only 22 km west of Montana city is Lopushanski monastery. Montana Dam Lake is another location not to be missed - a wonderful place for fishing, sports, water tourism. There are numerous restaurants and small hotels nearby. There are also mineral baths nearby in Varshets.
